Laser/IPL Permanent Hair Reduction
Imagine never having to wax or shave again….no in-growing hairs or those horrible little spots you get when new hairs start to grow. No working out your waxing dates to ensure you’re hair free for you holiday, no having to cover up in that time when your hairs are too short to wax but too long to display.
Laser-light/intense pulsed light permanent hair reduction is the answer.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. How Effective Is IPL?
A. That depends on a few things. IPL works fastest for thick/dark hair but so long as the hair is darker than the skin the hair is treatable.
Q. How effective is IPL for Women’s Facial Hair?
A. First of all I just want to say loud and clear “Women’s facial hair is normal and most of us get it!!!” Unfortunately it’s such a taboo subject that we women don’t talk about it, this is a shame because if it were accepted as natural it would save us an awful lot of stress. The fact is almost all women with dark brown hair (and a great deal of fairer women too!) will develop facial hair.
IPL does work very well in reducing women’s facial hair. However, women have as many facial hair follicles as men but at any one time most of the follicles are dormant. New hairs may well grow in the future and so many clients will require maintenance treatments after a course of treatments.
Q. Are there areas that can’t be treated?
A. Not many! Lots of women have all of their bikini area treated (Brazilian & Hollywood) which is absolutely fine, however mucosal tissue (wet areas) cannot be treated as these sensitive tissues can easily burn.
Also IPL is not suitable for men’s testicles as there is the possibility of fertility being compromised, however around the testicles is fine.
Q. How Does Intense Pulsed Light Work?
A. IPL treats the hairs that are actively growing at the time of treatment (which is around 10 – 25% of all hairs). We can’t tell which hairs are growing at any one time and so all hairs should be treated around once every 4 weeks for the face and 8 weeks for the body in order to get good clearance.
The light emitted from IPL changes from light energy to heat energy and is selectively absorbed by the melanin in the hair (the substance which gives hair its colour). This heat travels down the hair shaft and damages the cells around the growing hair follicle, preventing new growth. Repeated treatments are needed to ‘catch’ as many hairs as possible when they’re in the growing phase.
Q. How many treatments will I need?
A. That depends on: the area to be treated, client age, ethnicity, weight, metabolism, medication and hormones. During your consultation and patch test, your laser specialist will advise you on realistic expectations. As a general average 6 – 12 treatments are required and the thicker and darker the hair the quicker the result.
Q. Is the hair removal treatment painful?
A. It does hurt a bit but it’s quick and it’s certainly bearable. Many would say it’s a lot less uncomfortable than waxing and I don’t think anyone would disagree that it’s much less painful than electrolysis. Most people who experience the treatment describe the sensation as ‘like being pinged with an elastic band’.
Q. Is the treatment safe?
A. Yes. When provided for by an experienced and qualified clinician IPL is a very safe treatment with no lasting unwanted side effects.
Q. I’d like to know more.
A. Please book in for a free consultation and patch test and your specific requirements can be discussed in detail.
